Fade-In - Strange little film made concurrently with Blue, in reference to love event between film editor Loden and guy she meets when performing on location. Not extremely great, however an absolute curiosity on no account discharged theatrically. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Barbara Loden, Noam Pitlik, Patricia Casey, James Hampton, and Joseph Perry. (93 minutes, 1968)
Lost Horizon - First half hour copies 1937 film scene for scene, and everything's going well. Then we get to Shangri-La and everything goes bad. Cast includes Peter Finch, Liv Ullmann, Sally Kellerman, George Kennedy, Michael Yolk, Olivia Hussey, Bobby Van, James Shigeta, Charles Boyer, and John Gielgud. (143 minutes, 1973)
The Prestige - The setting is the early 1900's in London. Magicians are of high status in the entertainment business. Robert Angler and Alfred Borden, once partners on stage, are now in an intense battle to be the best magician in London. They will go to any means to beat the other.
Mamma Mia - Sophie is about to get married. Her single mom has invited her two best lifetime friends to the wedding. Sophie has invited three men from her mothers past, eager to find her father, and have him walk her down the aisle. Old romances are reborn during the disordered day before the wedding.
The Search - Emotional drama of American cadet Clift regarding for concentration camp survivor Jandl in postwar Berlin, when the boy's mother dejectedly looks all over the camps for him. Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes, 1948)
Repossessed - Here's a fashion satire of The Exorcist, with Blair herself as a housewife acquired anew by the identical demon she was purged of as a child. Too few gags, too frequent targets, and a meager ending make this movie weak. Blair and Nielsen as the exorcist are good. Cast includes Linda Blair, Ned Beatty, Leslie Nielsen, Anthony Starke, Lana Schwab, and Thom Sharp.
Casino - Sam Rothstein has worked his way through the mob ranks and now runs the casino that his Chicago outfit owns. When mafia strong arm Nicky Santoro arrives in town, Sam pleads with him to keep a low profile. Business is good, and his services aren't really needed. Nicky just can't help himself, and he starts banging heads. Now Sam's peace world gets turned completely upside down.
Gus - Football kicking mule named Gus catapults a last-place team to success; crooks try to abduct Gus with typical outcomes like dry pursuit in an expectation thriller. Cast includes Edward Asner, Don Knotts, Gary Grimes, Tim Conway, Louise Williams, Dick Van Patten, and Dick Butkus.
Metropolitan - Typical comedy, brimming with sarcasm, is set throughout Christmas season, with hermit Clements drawn into small gang of friends, and out of his shell. Cast includes Carolyn Farina, Edward Clements, Christopher Eigeman, Taylor Nichols, Allison Rutledge-Parisi, Dylan Hundley, Isabel Gillies, Bryan Leder, Can Kempe, and Elizabeth Thompson.
China Moon - Small-town cop Harris lusts after unhappily married Stowe in this moody film noir. A few nice twirls, although production is more than a tad analogous to the better Body Heat. This is a directorial debut for Bailey, more generally known as a top cinematographer. Cast includes Madeline Stowe, Charles Dance, Benicio Del Taro, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Roger Aaron Brown, and Patricia Healy.
