Whenever a Hollywood motion picture is produced the objective is to make a motion picture that the public loves and that will become a blockbuster hit. Take a remarkable story, throw in a couple of impressive stars along with some special effects and voila', a huge box office success. But it does not always work that way. Sometimes a film will include everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.

Take a good plot, throw in a couple of talented actors along with some special effects and voila', a huge box office success. But it does not always work that way. Sometimes a film will include everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.
The Net - Angela Bennett is a computer geek. She receives a program, and is asked to de-bug it. Shortly after receiving the program, the man who sent it to her is killed. What is on the disc is of critical significance to someone. They know she has it, and she is now running for her life as she tries to figure out just who is after her, and why.
After Life - This is a marvelously crafted story of case workers at a train station between the heavens who assist the recently departed to pick a lone moment from their pasts to live inside eternally. This is a serene, poetic assessment of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and blessedly free of some feel-good platitudes. Cast includes Aarata, Erika Oda, Susuma Terajirna, Taketoshi Naito, Kyoko Kagawa, Kei Tani, Takashi Naito, and Yusuke lseya. (118 minutes, 1998)
Cry the Beloved Country - Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced book, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time affluent landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see extraordinary work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
Slaughter's Big Ripoff - A killer is still playing games with the Mafia in this dull action film. McMahon gives more effort to his role as the mob boss than it is worth. Cast includes Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano. (93 minutes, 1973)
Bug - film version of Tracy Letts' play is tough to take critically however not without a twist or two if you could acknowledge it as a stunt. This is simply bug versus man. Cast includes Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Harry Connick, Jr., Lynn Collins, and Brian F. O'Byrne. (101 minutes, 2007)
The Last Time I Saw Archie - Webb's solitary try at comedy is less preposterous than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had true potential, and Mitchum pleasurably underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
The Seniors - 4 collegians open a counterfeit sex hospital, which mushrooms into a multi million dollar business. The movie is alternately stupid and sarcastic, with some harmless nudity thrown in. Cast includes Jeffrey Byron, Gary Imhof, Dennis Quaid, Lou Richards, PrisciIla Barnes, Alan Reed, Edward Andrews, Robert Emhardl, and Alan Hewitt. (87 minutes, 1978)
Scandalous - Featherbrained sham in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to remove himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes, 1984)
