Rock gigs were the rage in the 60's and they drove countless kids to buy their first guitars. Now, video games like Guitar Hero World Tour are having nearly the same effect.

The core of all classic rock music doesn't just lie with the words; it also lies with the electric guitar and the various sounds that it can produce. There are so many kids across the block who would give anything to play like Ritchie Blackmore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Angus Young etc. These men are not just some of the best guitarists of their times, they are legends.

Now if you are interested in finding out how to play the guitar then the first thing you'll need to do is select one. Most people start with an acoustic guitar and graduate to the electric. It can be quite tedious for someone new to choose the appropriate guitar initially, since there are hundreds of brands out there on the market. If you're purchasing an electric guitar then you'll need to also pick up an amp, pick-ups, picks, a tuner etc.

Electric guitars come in a lot of shapes and designs with the aerodynamic designs being some of the most popular. Don't go for the first electric guitar you see. You need to spend a fair amount of time looking around and check out the wide range of prices and vast array of models before you buy one. In actual fact, one of the coolest ways to pick a guitar is by the brand or by the style. Here is our take on the 4 important styles:

Stratocaster (Better known as a 'Strat') - This certainly is a show stealer and has a typical style. The most famous is the red and white color combination, which was played prolifically by Knopfler of Dire Straits. The Strato is from Fender and has a neck attached to the guitar body. Aside from this, it has twin cutaway sides, 22 frets accompanied by a wammy arrangement and 3 pickups. Fender designed the first Stratocaster in the early 50's. A few of the popular designs are:

* Deluxe Strat: Approx $400 * Fender American Deluxe Strat HSS Electric Guitar: Approx $1250 * Standard Strat Electric Guitar in Maple: Approx $400 * Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar in Rosewood: Approx $750 * Fender Stratocaster Eric Johnson Signature model: Approx $1900

Telecaster - The Telecaster is another great guitar from Fenders. It is more than just another electric guitar; it is more like a complete orchestra. It is a solid body guitar and comprises of twin pick-ups. The first Telecaster was produced by Fender in the 40's and has a mono cutaway body. It doesn't have the tremolo bar but has 2 different single-coil pickups. Some of the popular Telecaster models include:

* Fender American Tele HS guitar: $950-$1100 * Standard Tele Electric: $300-$600 * Fender 63 Telecaster Relic Solid Body: $2600-$3000 * Fender 72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar: $750-$850

Les Paul - This classic guitar was designed by Gibson for many of the jazz stars of the day. The striking feature of a Gibson Les Paul guitar is its set neck construction, which means there are no joints. The body is a single cutaway. It is fitted out with two pickups as well as a scratch-plate. If you want to play distorted sound then the Les Paul will provide you with a varied range. Some of the well known guitarists who use the Les Pauls include Eric Clapton and Slash (ex-GNR). Some of the notable Les Paul models include:

* Les Paul Custom Electric: $3050-$3550 * 1959 Les Paul Standard: $5550-$6050 * Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric: $700-$800 * Les Paul Classic Electric: $1800-$1950

Gibson - This is one of the greatest brands in music and all their models are classics that shoud not be compared to others. Gibson guitar company was actually founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson and has been responsible for giving the world some of the most innovative acoustic and electric guitars. A couple of the famous models include the ES-150 and the Gibson Explorer etc. Some of the well known guitarists who have played a Gibson or are still using it include Ace Frehley and Frank Zappa to name just a couple. Some of the popular Gibson models include:

* Flying V Electric: $500-$600 * Gibson SG 61 Classic Electric Guitar: $1500-$1600 * Faded SG Special Electric Guitar: $550-$600 * Explorer Pro Electric Guitar: $1100-$1200

These are the most well known brands of guitars. The other aspects that will help you to pick up a guitar include fretboard, the type of pick-ups, and the body. Full-bodied guitars are generally favored as they can generate some of the best noises that you will ever get to hear.
